MUST THE SURYABHEDI AND THE CHANDRABHEDI PRAANNAAYAAMAS BE DONE ONLY DURING THE SUMMER AND THE WINTER?

It is a well-known fact that the Chandraabhedi praannaayaama is done in the summer season and the Suryabhedi praannaayaama in the winter season.

All the standard texts on the Yoga and even the great Yoga-teachers prescribe the same, too!

The Suryabhedi praannaayaama is recommended only for the winter season since it generates a lot of heat which is easier to tolerate in cold winters when the environmental-temperature is low.

The heat generated by this praannaayaama helps prevent cold-generated ailments such as the cough, influenza, etc. Moreover, in winters, the Maanava shareera needs more heat to keep itself warm than in the summers.

Similarly, the Chandrabhedi praannaayaama is strictly meant for the summers because it cools down the body a lot at a time when the environmental-temperature around is very high and unbearable. The Maanava shareera is in urgent need of cooling in the unbearably hot summers.

However, this strict demarcation of the Suryabhedi praannaayaama and the Chandrabhedi praannaayaama in the seasonal compartments is a very simplistic and generalised version.

Dr Swaamee Aprtemaanandaa Jee’s scientific theory and explanation

The factual truth and reality is that the suitability of the Suryabhedi praannaayaama and the Chandrabhedi praannaayaama isn’t season-specific. Their usefulness is dependent mainly on the temperature around with respect to the temperature of the shareera of the Yoga-practitioner.

For example, it is useful to practise the Suryabhedi praannaayaama even during the summer season if the Yoga-practitioner is in a cooler environment such as the highlands, hills, plateaus and mountains where temperatures may often be lower and similar to that which prevails in the winter seasons in the plains.

Also, those working most of the time mainly in the air-conditioned cool environs in big establishments, industries or such other cool buildings can perform the Suryabhedi praannaayaama even when it is summer outside.

Similarly, it is advisable to practise the Chandrabhedi praannaayaama even during the traditional winter season if the temperature around is higher than the Maanava shareera and similar to that which otherwise prevails only in the summer seasons.

It is winter for you even when the season is actually the summer if you are suffering from cold-related health problems such as the severe cough, cold, throat-infection, etc. No harm in performing the Suryabhedi praannaayaama in such a scenario.

The same way, it is summer for you even when the season is actually the winter outside if you are feeling extremely hot and having health-problems caused by the excessive heating of the body. It shall be useful to perform the Chandrabhedi praannaayaama to get relief in such a situation.

Sometimes, it so happens that the temperature in the valley is low during the winters. Whereas the temperature in the higher reaches or the hills/slopes around is more and akin to the summer-temperatures. In such a situation, those living in the upper reaches or the higher hills/slopes around may undertake the Chandrabhedi praannaayaama without fear of any adverse side-effects.

The present scientific research paper clearly shows that the decision to perform the Chandrabhedi or Suryabhedi praannaayaama must ordinarily be only based on the temperature of the Maanava shareera vis a vis the environmental-temperature around and be not the season-specific exercise!
