Recently something came to my attention that in no other religious literature you can find so much information’s about the soul like in our Bhagavad-gita, and believe me I looked around a lot. Actually, all other religions have no clear concept of the soul; I remember my meeting with one very learned Christina priest at one nice monastery in my country and our talk about the soul. Basically, this priest had no clear conception of the soul and body; Somehow he mixed both of them in one entity, he was all the time stressing the importance of reappearance from the death (both Muslims and Christians believe that dead body will again reappear. This is why for them it is a sin to cremate the body). Finally I got fed up of listening to this nonsense, I stopped him and asked, “Prabhu what about the soul, please tell me are we this body or the soul???” He was completely puzzled; he was not expecting such direct question. He said “We are both”. Then I asked him, “What about the animals, do they have soul?” He said, “No, they don’t, they are objects created by the Lord for the service of humanity.” Believe me it was very hard to control myself from laughing but somehow I managed. I thought, “My God! What ignorance! The whole religion is based on misconceptions. (Srila Prabhupada, only you have saved me from such ignorance). At the end of our conversation, out of great respect for his tapasya (long life celibate, life of total isolation and dedication to the Lord) I wanted to tell to the priest just see how our Lord Krsna speaks about the soul, but I could understand that he was not ready for that yet in this janma.
If we look very carefully, our Supreme Father Sri Krsna has already provided for each of us the qualities requested by Hiranyakashipu to Sri Brahmaji. We are all constitutionally eternal and we do not need tapasya to achieve this.
Now let us see how our Master in hardly few lines (2.13-30 Bg, 17 verses) describes the 25 qualities of the soul, and please do always refer to these qualities when preaching to common people, give them hope and encouragement that there is life after death and our soul is eternal; don't let them get victimized by religions which are full of misconceptions-jugupsitam:
1. dehaantara — Transferred from the body
2. avinaashi — Imperishable
3. anaashinah — Never to be destroyed
4. aprameyasya — Immeasurable
5. na jaayate — Never takes birth
6. na mriyaate — Never dies
7. na bhutva — Never came into being
8. ajah — Unborn
9. nityah — Eternal
10. shaasvatah — Permanent
11. puraanah — The oldest
12. avyayam — Immutable
13. na chindanti shastraani - Cannot be cut into pieces by any weapon
14. acchedyah — Unbreakable
15. adahyah — Cannot be burned
16. akledyah — Insoluble
17. ashoshyah — Cannot be dried
18. sarva-gatah — All-pervading
19. sthaanuh — Unchangeable
20. acalah — Immovable
21. sanaatanah — Eternally the same
22. avyaktah — Invisible
23. acintyah — Inconceivable
24. aashcaryavat — Amazing
25. avadhyah — Cannot be killed
At the end, what can an ignorant person like me say, only that we should all be transcendentally proud that we have an opportunity to learn transcendental knowledge from such a great book called Srimad Bhagavad-gita!!!
I am with all of you who at this moment are sincerely praying and hoping that our Gurudev, Krsna willing will soon recover and continue to share with all of us his nectarean teachings of Bhagavad-gita.
Until then, I remain your most fallen servant and brother,
Murlidhara Krsna das
