More about me:
My short bio-date written by some scholar as --- "Salil Gewali is a well know figure whose significantly philosophical write-ups command high appreciation of the readers of the Northeast. A man of solemn dignity with warm and genuine amiability, he has immense reverence for the nation, its secular heritage and wisdom which are reflected in his articles. Born and brought up in Shillong, Meghalaya, he is socially active with high aim and ambition to serve the country and thus ensure complete welfare of the society. Started as a freelancer in the late 1980’s, his articles and letters which appear in several local and national newspapers are read with much awe and admiration by the readers. He is doubtlessly an embodiment of truthfulness, righteousness and patriotism. A post graduate in English Literature, Salil Gewali rose to fame for his excellent publication of his book entitled ‘Great minds on India’ which has already earned worldwide appreciation. The book that was released by the Governor of Meghalaya Shri R. S. Mooshahary in 2009 is now being translated into Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Hindi and Nepali. He has been recently awarded by a national organization ‘United Creative Writers’ Association’ besides the Appreciation from the Meghalaya Government for his writing and social service. Also a member of the International Organization of Journalists (IOJ), Gewali has written 17 books including school textbooks. One of the prominent figures in the field of academy, he has written books for school students. His books are also recommended as textbooks by Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) beside by the front ranking private schools in the state. Salil Gewali has written a large number of short articles for various newspapers. His book ‘Great minds on INDIA?’ speaks volume about his concerns for the society. He shows immense amount of nationalist approach, patriotism and a deep reverence for the intellectual prowess of the ancient literature and their authors. For his intellectual refinement, Gewali gives credit to the classical literature besides the works of western scholars like Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Emerson, Carl Sagan, Alan Watts and Aldous Huxley. He says great minds like Voltaire, T.S. Eliot, Friedrich Hegel, Julius Robert Oppenheimer (father of Atomic Bomb), Emerson, Thoreau, Erwin Schrodinger (father of Quantum mechanics), Mark Twain and so on had drawn sufficient intellectual nourishment from Indian classical literatures, the facts which are hardly know to the general masses in India. Commenting on the emerging trends of journalism Salil Gewali laments, ‘today the profession is bereft of ethics and the trend is fast rearing its ugly head. He says – ‘that steady degeneration of media is really a curse for the whole mankind. The greed of money is the root cause of this malaise.’ He opines that a journalist may be a faithful employee, but his responsibility is primarily towards the welfare of the masses. Public has the right to know the truth about the happening incidences, events etc. But however, they must be informed objectively, accurately, impartially and judiciously so that the news disseminated would not wreak havoc in the public domain. If the media loses trust of the readers, it loses all that is worth in journalism. Because, journalism is not a craftsmanship, it is creative ability with human sensitivity and compassion to seek to see the overall harmony, welfare and peace in the society.” ---- Dr. (Prof). G. P. Pandey, Written on behalf of the ‘Government of India’ Head of the Department of Mass Communication University of Assam, Silchar
