Master Chandra Cohen (USA):
Chandra Cohen combines intensive practice, years of experience with renowned teachers, and a deep knowledge of the scriptures. With his humorous and clear manner, he guides you to your inner truth. Formerly known as Swami Chandra Shekarananda, he was a student of Swami Vishnudevananda from 1968 to 1984.
During his stay at the Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesh, Swami Brahmananda, a senior monk and teacher, introduced him particularly intensively to the formal teachings of the Upanishads and Sankara Advaita, the classical non-duality. He deepened this knowledge over the next 25 years through the inspiration of Swami Dayananda, the world-renowned Advaita teacher. During this time, Chandra earned a master's degree from Columbia University, which enabled him to become an associate professor of Hinduism and Eastern religions at Hunter College in New York City. Chandra's understanding was most recently influenced by Swami Satchidanandendra, one of the most important Advaita thinkers in generations, through his only direct Western disciple, Ira Shepetin.
For 15 years, Chandra has been teaching Advaita in Yoga Vidya's advanced yoga teacher training courses. Today, he lives in New York with his wife, to whom he has been married for twenty years, and his son.
