As far as my yoga practice goes, which is worse, meat or alcohol? This question was asked by one of our Facebook friends and received several answers. Do you have any other comments? Dennis: ~Both~ Mascha: I think, along with doing yoga both eating meat and drinking alcohol will no more attract you. You will be choosing proper sattva food, good for your body and mind. It happens in a natural way. Simi: My understanding is that meat is not advised because there is no 'prana' left in it by the time it has passed through the food chain to reach a human, and hence cannot energize one the way the 'prana' in fresh vegetables and fruits, and eve...n fresh meat that has been consciously obtained can. And from what else I know, alcohol is not advised because it can affect the lucidity of one's mind. What is worse? My take is that it's NOT so much WHAT you're feeding yourself that has the most profound effect on your practice, but with HOW MUCH AWARENESS you're feeding yourself - food AND thoughts. Jordan: Why the choice? If one has to ask you are not listening to your body. Natasha: alcohol is worse it devours brain cells and also distorts brain paths . note: for some yogic practices like looking into future or for maintenance of a good aura aound self or community or ,willing things to happen by the mind ,kundlini or other meditation practitioners spend years perfecting it but there are s...ome yogis who say that a short cut to this is available by stimulation of brain cells in such a way by smoking Charas which is cheaply available in the himalayas and then going into a trance with complete awareness. You find these practices very common among sadhus who also become addicts but there are claims that it works. I personally think the hard long way of meditation is best .charas is an external agent .See More Bobby: Insightful as always Natasha. As for meat and alcohol, it is good to be a drunken predator. Mis: I think both are worse Shirley: I think both are Flexible. Guru Bala: Meat will harden your muscles and joints, ! Sita Chaitanya: Both meat and alcohol are ultimately tamasic. Alcohol is a mind altering substance and so it puts holes in the pranic body which can take a long time to heal with pranayama. Meat clogs the nadis and it takes a lot less time to clear nadis by doing pranayama. While both are bad, I would say alcohol is worse from that viewpoint. Meat has the problem of himsa in a lot of cases. Alcohol consumption creates a ton of societal and personal problems. Bobby: @yoga vidya-- I follow the karma clues with mindful attention to moderation. But I am most comfortable as a predator, even if a benign one. Sita Chaitanya: For some people that is ok. The Dalai Lama eats meat from what I have heard. Shoumava: both are tamsik bhojan or lowly diets prohibited for a Yogi but you can eat meat as it is a basic requirement of our body and people who cannot afford or get good nutritious vegeteranian diet always can have meat the whole worlds alcohol should be drained below the seas so many houses would be saved Sherry: both of them! Gregg: Which one do you like better? Probably both ! Jake: When your body craves meat, eat meat. If you drink, the negative effects will be apparent longer that those that you would get from eating meat, but all wounds eventually heal. I have been told that yoga can be great when your under the influence, but stay grounded if you choose to practice while intoxicated. I guess the alcohol helps to relax your muscles or something and I can't help but think what a disaster a Tree or Dancer could end in when in that unstable condition.
