i am wondering what makes a *genuine* yogin. Is it daily practice? A
degree from a school? A meditative experience? The blessing of a
teacher or guru? Thanks!
One of our facebook friends asked this question. Here are a few answers - do you have anything else to add?
April: All of the above... + living a harmonious life, kindless to others, being a custodian of the earth and contentment.
Nitin: Just a simple livin, and karmyoga makes you genuine yogi or yogini.
Stephanie: I think it's someone who's constantly looking inward.
Nitin: Ramta jogi bahta pani
Jeff: i wonder about this, because here in the 'States there is a big controversy about who has the *right* to teach yoga - and the state is getting in on it. How strange!
Angele: What do you mean by that Jeff??
Vineshnee: Hi all.Explain Jeff?
Lucy: A yogin is clearly defined in Chapter 2 of the bhagavad Gita when Arjun asks Krishna how can a yogin be recognised? Krishna gives the answer in shlokas 55- 72. om
Shailendra: A genuine yogi is one who abides in his true nature.
Jeff: Hi Shailendra - this is a traditionally accurate answer - but how is one to infer the invisible "abiding in true nature" from outward signs?
In response to Angele and Vineshnee - at least three American states, Texas, Virginia and Missouri - are attempting to regulate and tax yoga education. If us yogins (including Arjuna) have trouble recognizing the *real thing,* i wonder how the Great State of Texas will do it...
Sita Chaitanya: I think NY is doing this also.
I don't think for the state regulators it's about recognizing who is a yogi. They just want to tax anybody who claims to be training yoga teachers. Whether you're a yogi at the end is irrelevant, they just want... the money they can get by taxing anybody who does the training.
Vineshnee: Interesting...havent heard of this in South Africa...

Susan: Amor Mundis. Love the world
Jorge: from my point of view, devotion, determination, humility, no attachments, seek the greatness in all the sentient beings
Jeff: the state's interest in who's a *real yogin* in very different from our own interests - whether we are looking for a great teacher or to live up to our own potential. yes - the state wants control and cash, and that's not what we're about - but they will MAKE it our concern
Carina: Love everyone, Love!
Blue: Blue Spice Holidays would define "A Yogin" as Ideal state of physical and mental state attained by the various aspects such as practice, degree, experience, guruthvam..... as mentioned by you
Cheers
Sanjay: Prefection in action.
Natasha: Yes the genuine yogin would always have high efficiency in any action. and also realise that to maintain that efficiency continued refinement of the yoga practices be maintained .
Shammi: Depends on one's personality completely. If one is active and extrovert, he or she will believe in the yogin who is very good with postures and especially strenous postures whereas if one loves to stay with self and is intovert, he or she w...ill believe in the yogin who is very much into pranayama and meditation. In fact, presence of all these factors are important but the one which will dominate ones life will depend on ones personality. Yoga is completely practical in all aspects. So practice and first hand experience is must in everything.
Shoumava: 3 yrs of yoga practice gives you a good yogic physique later on you can practice at your pace and become a true yogi..time is important..relaxation after practice is important too
