Judy: Thought down dog was an all over body posture????
Eileen: D/D is not a relaxation pose that's for sure...you are working your whole body....but once you have the strength it can be a resting pose between standing strength poses....
Vikram: feel loose - don’t stretch too much for a few days till your shoulders strengthen and wrists - after a few days stretch your calves keeping heels on floor and hamstrings pushing tailbone/hips up - in 10 days your shoulder muscular tensions should loosen up and strengthen - leg muscles lengthen - once this is done the asana becomes a relaxation pose as half the body blood volume flows into the head working the pineal + pituitary glands relaxing the adrenal and removing stress elements both physical and mental.
Rupali: If u r getting tension in ur shoulders, u r not working ur legs.. next tym in the pose, push ur heels into the ground, concentrate on working ur legs, this way u r putting ur body weight on ur legs and feet.. keep ur hands firm and consciously try to push ur shoulders away from ur ears.. a very subtle action but u will feel the difference. The pose is a mix between relaxation and strenuous.. as i said, u r working ur legs, while ur head is more or less relaxing.
Assim: definatly u will feel tension on ur sholders ,, coz ur whole weight in ur arms and legs ,, slowly slowly as ur sholders will b strong then the tension will b less ,,,
Judith: You are probably just getting used to it my friend it becomes easier, and before you know it it is a relaxation Posture, stick with it, i love it and do it several times each day :)
Shirley: Down dog posture is good exercise for our abdomen and shoulder stressing good in. you can just follow yoga teacher's always.

Lucy: any asan once correct is relaxing. According to Patanjali the definition of an asan is sthiram sukham asanam which can be translated as an asan is that which is stable and gived you pleasure (ie relaxation, comfortable etc) that asan which is uncomfortable is most necessary since it reveals the poor flow of energy in that position and will be generally relieved by the practise of it itself..om
