To practise yoga asanas u search for and find a teacher..u practice for example 2 years , but still there is no progress in the health/body..who does something wrong then, the student or the teacher?

This question was asked and answered on facebook - maybe you have more ideas?

Harte: It is not possible if you practice yoga for 3 2years, and u didn't get fruition...wrong with the consistence else wrong education imparted if you are true in your dedication...
Denise: The teacher.
Veerasana: tell me more...is yogic diet and meditation also a part of this? Asanas alone are not enough.

Sidnei: And how often is the practice?!

Anne: ‎"When the student is ready...the teacher will come..."

Premal: sometimes it takes very long... asanas are only postures that make foundation strong for further progress... and foundations are not seen (they are below the ground) but seem proven when you built upon that....

Vidya: no..yogic diet is not a part of this. the meditation classes the student followed were experienced positive..but when practicing hatha yoga asanas according to the teacher there was no progress , and even when the student remarked that a lower back pain problem is troubling there were not specific asanas given..just followed the class. teacher later told..it's in ur mind, that u not progress

Guru: First, is the teacher qualified ?, 2 Is the student practicing systematically and following the advices of the teacher ? Then there shouldn't be much problem. Sometimes the progress is bit slow due to age , the younger you are the more flexible your body is and the results are faster !

Misa: And it could be definitely resistance in the mind of the student...

Erica: Bring an empty class to the mat everytime, then you will find you are progressing every time =)!!!! No judgement but keep practice and awareness ! Enjoys yoga enjoy life =)

Niranjan: Remember that Yoga is not just an excercise regime. It helps in making a person SWASTHA - SWA+ASTHA (Established in Oneself). Yoga is UNION with your SELF. If you want to understand this better and experience this, do the "Basic Course" and "Sri Sri Yoga" from the Art Of Living. Listen to "Patanjali's Yoga Sutras" By Sri Sri Ravishankar. Yoga requires a lifetime of dedication and love to it.

Yenny: I agree with Sidnei. 2 years regularly or on and off?

Sanjay: u r absolutely rite @niranjan ji...

Suguna: Breathing , breathing , breathing .... Yoga is useless without breath . In class we used to be told that if there were any niggling pains n aches one has to visualise as we inhale that the breath (prana) is travelling to that area , as one ...exhales conciously relax those muscles, I always had amazing results. I am surprised that the student's bank pain wasnt taken into account during practice. I suffered from extreme lower back ache and weakness after child birth and my gurus guided me ever so gently , that today I have a GREAT bendy back .. among the bendiest in class !! Maybe find another teacher ...in Yoga there should never be pain .See More

Victoria: Sometimes progress is just not going backwards... staying "in the same place" for some people is a sign of progress.

Robert: I can't believe that after 2 years of Hatha Yoga, you don't feel any progress. I think the reason is student's mind (assuming that your teacher is not a fitness instructor, as you see in most of the yoga classes in downtown :) ).

Anju: practicing yoga means total surrender to GOD !!

  • Lack of progress in yoga - is it the fault of the teacher or student?
I am surprise to see this question
    In my opinion it depends
it can be from both sides, depending upon situations
but i feel that everyone should do each work and assigned work with honesty

Lack of progress in Yog , can not be fault of Teacher , whoever teacher may be , learning Yog depends on how the student is grasping Yog cocepts . To understand and do you properly , it must be Done First . If one thinks of understanding first and then doing it latter after uderstanding thoroughly , reading books , listening to0 Masters in this field etc etc , it Yog will never be learnt this way. Yogen Yog Dnyatavyao , Yogo Yogat pravartate. Only By doing yog , one can understand Yog , not otherwise . Yog is a perfect experience based science ,like one can understand scientific Principals and worldly phenomenon by doing experiements in Laboratory, similarly yog can be learnt only be experiences one gets by doing yog .

  • Yes, i fully agree with you. More often than not it is the expectations that let the students down.
  • "If you find one suffering from stress and problems even after many years of yoga practice, the reason is the lack of understanding yama and Niyama." - Harilalji, Arsha Yoga Community

    According to him:

"Practice of ‘Yama’ helps to calm the mind. It’s not just to keep the law and order of the society. In order to achieve the peace, one has to practice it from the heart. It is not what you practice, but the intention that is more important. The practice of ‘yama’ and ‘niyama’ should be ‘manasa’ (mentally) ‘vacha’ (by word) and ‘karmana’ (by action). It is important, that a ‘sadhaka’ do ‘swadhyaya’ (self analyzing) on his daily actions.

‘Yama’ and ‘Niyama’ are the first limbs of the ‘ashtanga yoga’. It is not necessary that one should become perfect in yama and niyama to start Asana but it is important to keep working on it your whole life. Otherwise after a certain limit, his progress will stagnate. If you find one suffering from stress and problems even after many years of yoga practice, the reason is the absence of understanding the yama and Niyama.

Yamas are attitude or behavior we have to follow with society and Niyamas are the attitude or behavior we have to follow in our personal life in order to make our life peaceful and further lead to spiritual uplift mend. One may give more importance to yama and niyama in the beginning of the yoga practice and once it becomes a part of us we can focus on other practices.

It is not the practice but the attitude is that is more important.

Yamas are Sathya (truthfuless), ahimsa (non violence), Brahmacharya (self disciplines), Astheya (none cheating / none exploiting) and aparigraha (non greediness and give up all undesired things and position).

Niyamas are soucha (cleaniness), santhosha (contentment), Tapa( austerity, practice austerity willingly in regular practice), Eswerapranidhana (self surrendering or complete trust in the path you follow) and swadhyaya (self analyzing).

These are the key stones to our happiness."

    • Yes that is a good point Ajith. I would also ask the question of what kind of expectation the student had at the beginning. If you had none and just accepted what happened I can't imagine there was not progress made. It may be progress of a different kind than was expected leading to the illusion that there was none.
