Significance of chanting prayers 3 times

In my yoga class the teacher often chants the prayers 3 times. What is the significance of this? This question was asked by one of our Facebook friends and received several answers. Do you have any other comments? Shoumava: it depends...there are auspicious numbers for that you have to refer numerology..3 i dont think is very auspicious number for chanting...1/5/7/9/11/15/27 are and 108 is the most Shobhana: Yes, we chant OM 3 times. Swami Saradananda: OM 3 times - but you can chant as many as you like. Shibhana: Thanks! :) Its a minimum of 3 times, they say. Shakhar: Om Namah Shivaay 1st om and prayer for Universe. 2nd for Nature. 3rd for all Species (include human beings) Namaste Annie: My answer would be "I don't believe prayer is appropriate in a hatha yoga in the States. People don't go to yoga for religion and including scares many people away.,," Maria: Those are who go to a Yoga group only as an gym exercise- Yes, it´s true- Some people do hatha Yoga just because a doctor told them that Yoga offers them benefits for their health. Their are not interested in their Spirit health- They have no idea what is that- Sita Chaitanya: Yoga is not a religion. Nishant: I'm fully agree with you @Yoga Vidya ... You're absolutely right :) Tania: But what's lovely is when those people that come for health reasons get a little love that creeps in anyhow :} Judith: Annie and Maria How very Odd of Course Yoga is not a religion, however it is Spiritual and of the Mind and Prayer is Spiritual, I'm from a Catholic Background but have practiced Yoga for 40 years, it cannot be separated from the Spiritual its not Yoga otherwise, people who cant grasp that should go to pilates Sita Chaitanya: Spirituality doesn't necessarily have anything to do with religion either. Judith: I agree 100% the point i was trying to make exactly but somehow didnt manage to convey, thank you :) Max: There'r more then one single answer....in fact there are plenty o'em... Elizabeth: you don’t hear it till the third time around. Archana: i think its this way -4 most of the people when its done or repeated thrice then only it reaches mind . the distance of the center which controls our actions being done mechanically and consciously r at the thrice repeating in the brain o...f most {%wise more} the common people. Lidiane: I think it is almost impossible to separate Yoga from religion... Yoga as says the hindu tradition, was created by the god Shiva... and yoga means "connection with God" and the word religion comes from the word religio in Latin = worship, and the verb Religare, which means reconnect ( in this case, with God)... so...as my teacher says... u can do all yoga phisical exercises, if u don’t breath the way they say and if it is not used to connect u with God... It can be called anything but yoga... Maria: It´s just exercise, isn´t it? December 29, 2010 at 7:23pm · LikeUnlike · Natasha: Yoga is no exercise . Those who consider it as so dont know the meaning . Shiva was a master meditator and thats why he has the capacity to destroy so that the earth may regenearate more finer beings . Its like destroying the grass on ...the rich brown earth by burning it so that out of the burnt ground fresh green crops may grow in the rains . Shiva was a master in KUNDALINI yoga .. yoga is a sanskrith word and is derived from Yuj which means to join the beginning with the end ... to join with your soul .. to concatenate with the ultimate truth or the brahman . .... and is the only Path which has the capacity to get there. ..if one goes deep into yoga ,the asanas are barely less than 1 % of the path . The major part of the yoga path of living is made up of meditation practices .See More Natasha: everytime and every second you meditate you become a more finer being . the asanas are to strenghthen the body to prepare for long hours of meditation practice . prayer 3 times has no significance i know of . maybe 3 is her lucky number . Sumit: well 3 times for body. mind and soul or u can say physical plane, mental plane and spritual plane hence 3 times to make all silent :) Sita Chaitanya: I understood that it is 3 times because there is more power behind the mantras when they are said 3 times, and that many things are given in 3's, religious and otherwise. Also from a brahmin priest/swami, he told us it's also the first repetition is for the universe, the second for the surrounding area, and the third for immediately around you and inside you. It's the bhava that makes the difference anyway, not how many times you say it.
