Yoga classes for children

I am a parent interested in getting my child into yoga classes. How do I look for a good practice or yoga style for children? Should children do breathing exercises? This question was asked by one of our Facebook friends and received several answers. Do you have any other comments? Gabi: I never heard of yoga classes for kids but i guess you should start teaching some breathing techniques... kids sometimes are natural yogues, they like to stay in some typical positions and explore their flexibility in a way that is sometimes quite close to yoga practices... Natasha: childrens bodies bend easily since the bones are easily bent since they are growing . Its good if children start yoga but better to have a kid who is a little aged above say 6 years old and with proper instructions . The kid can break somet...hing which would be permanent . Best to get to an instructor who is a practitioner himself .Also get the kid to a normal yoga class and not the newfangled clones called power yoga and some other disco yoga . Normal hatha yoga only . Sandhya: surya namaskara is the best option for children.can be practise from childhood. Kireet: In the "Art of Living" they have a program for children called "Art Excel". It's good. Hazel: I teach hatha Yoga to children they love it, all the postures become the animals, and we tell stories to include them, at the end we have a guided meditation and we do some breathing at the start and end of class, they also like mantras although sometimes they cant take that too seriously.
