Yoga for epilepsy

is there any yoga asanas for epilepsy (dimag ke dore) This question was asked on our facebook page and received several answers - do you have any other advice? Sita Chaitanya: I don't personally have epilepsy but I know of a yoga teacher who does and as long as she does her yoga practice regularly she does not have seizures. When she doesn't practice she has seizures. She is a Sivananda yoga instructor. She doesn't limit any asanas. Luciana: I don't have any experience whit this, but I agree the pratice all day guive a yoguin peace and calm, that can let people who has epilepsy, have less or none seizures. Laura: Yes. There are over 40 kinds of epilepsy! They can start at any age. My Guru practiced Acupuncture and was able to take a boy of about age 10 off of meds... to the point where he no longer needed acupuncture anymore.... but a complex confl...uence of circumstances brought his seizures on again a year later. The kind of seizures needs to be considered for treatment. I am familiar with Temporal Lobe epilepsy. We know that regular practice daily of meditation, generally tratakam on fire or performance of Agni Hotra worked well, but also combined with extremely rigorous and regular exercise. These calmed the brain. Epilepsy is a neurologically disposed condition and affected by biorhythms of hormones in both males and females. In women, "drying up" is largely psychological due to expectations and beliefs.. or genetics. A woman can have as much as 1500 times the amount of hormones surge in to her blood during the week before her cycle and in to first few days as she did experience as a teenager. Hormones can boost all adrenal responses. This means that if an extreme fright occurs during time of ovulation breasts and hips can swell... and sometimes breasts will get a lump... even size of walnut or golfball. Generally when adrenal response subsides within the next menstrual period the lump subsides never to return. My joke was to go see scary movies ... avoid silicon! Tell this to Hollywood! OK enough silly willy. The increase in adrenalin plus hormone levels can exacerbate epilepsy. Especially Limbic or Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. Someone with either of these kinds could have only one grand mal seizure in their life time where all whole body goes into manifestation. These people frequently have rage fits that are OUTRAGIOUS and have nothing to do with anyone around them... it is horrible. They will not remember what they did or said when they were in the "blinding rage". The Washington D.C. Epilepsy Foundation will suggest that you monitor their moods with little symbols they are not aware of the meaning. You will find that once a week is someone with a hissy fit.... once a month someone with a major rage fit, and 4 times a year get out of the house it's going to be just horrific and you could be in danger.... they won't even know it. They will say, "Oh it was not that bad". They have no idea the effect they have on people and it is horrible for those around them.... because of this> Often times they have extremely redeeming talents or mannerisms so endearing you are really confused what to do. Your friends will think you are the crazy one because often times for some weird reason they are able to handle and repress these outbursts socially! Additionally if there are periods where they have to behave in ways around people socially, like family visitng from out of town.... and one is due to come on.... it will be collosal as soon as the guests leave. I hope this has been helpful. I know meditation can help some people.. but not if there is low blood flow conditions to the pre-frontal cortex. It's not easy to teach to people wired like this.... they also need a specific kind of yoga that includes the breath.... for scientific reasons. Not just yoga like Iyengar which does very little combo of breathing while doing asanas... and not just doing pranayama separately... and there are different schools of thought we are not sure where these came from. Desikachaya and Krishnachaya, father and son.... I swear the son reversed the breathing just to be different and rebel in to his own ways from the father... but at least they were on the right track to combine breathing with asanas. The Sivananda Yoga style as you know rocks.... and there is a nice center several places Val Morin and Jamaica and Bahamas and so on... but also the AMerican Academy of Sanskrit, Vyas teaches a really unusual kind of breathing with the asanas that I videotaped for him a long time ago and I found it to be brilliant for certain kinds of people. Sent with LOVE! Hope this helps... Important thing about noting on a calendar is to find your own biorhythms of hormonal fluctuations. It's rather obvious with women, but not so obvious with men who have these tremendous mood swings too. Candice Pert did research at Prince...ton and found that a man's semen on a woman's stomach will change her timing so that she ovulates when the man's testosterone is at its highest. The pheremones get absorbed right through the skin. For some women as myself, just being around certain alpha men, I get affected by smell... but I am extremely sensitive. The point is, that epilepsy can be thrown into expression due to a variety of environmental and external circumstances that the person who bears this circumstances may not even be able to monitor... so if someone can do it for them... with discretion of course.... it is helpful for those who have to bear and be around those who need support..... even those who will never be able to realize their effects on others. At least you can be aware of when something is coming. A very good yoga for this is matsyasana... fishpose... legs straight or not.... if can't get in to it have them lay on a pillow that allows head to place mostly top of head on the floor. Then do breathing where air is drawn in to nose and hits the back of the throat. Have them focus and tunnel the breath to hit there. It is the most effective way to calm the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The Pingala and the Ida respectively, because the olfactory nerve bulb sits right there by the Vegal nerve. Over time this is effective for calming the nervous system entirely. Ann: Excellent commentary from Laura Drewes. :-) Praveena: Any kriya or pranayam that hyperventilates should be avoided, like kapalbhati, bhastrika. Sunita: pranayams, om chanting, pratice humming sound Suresh: There is only one place in whole world, where ancient idod ( made of eight mix element called ashtha- dhatu ) sheshnaag( resting place of lord vishnu) purify holy water from river ganges in a sea cell ( quench ) by secret m...antra and offer eplepsy pattient to drink the water from quench and epilepsy dissappears for ever.. I born and bread in that village so i am eyewitness myself... Being a brahman, we are the worshiper of lord Naag devta ( king serpent )..this cure is a free of charge..... In yoga.. the pranayama with bandhas, kriya with jal neti will be usefull as well as meditation onheaqrt chakra..for peace and calm..
