Yoga for scoliosis

i had a severe spinal scoliosis operation 9 years ago .... i still have 2 titanium retainers side by side with my spine .. is it safe for me to do yoga ?? One of our facebook friends asked this question and received several replies - what would you advise? Vivek: U dnt do hard kind of aasans! start with pranayam and other simple aasans. Ananya: only under proper, very well trained guidance Sita Chaitanya: I think almost anyone with any sort of medical condition can do some part of yoga and it will benefit you. Some of the postures may be difficult, but with a caring knowledgeable teacher I think it would help you a lot and there'd be a lot of postures you could try. You could also learn pranayama and meditation. You can read yoga scriptures, and do kirtan, there's lots more to yoga than just the asanas. Kapil: Yoga can strengthen and stretch muscles that support the back and that have become weak and tightened due to asymmetrical shape of the spine. Yoga can help in lengthening the spine to bring it to the center. Scoliosis Yoga can relieve tension in the muscles that support the spine and create more space between the vertebrae. This can help in relieving compression in the vertebrae. Yvonne: Dear Karen, yoga is great for recovering and helps in any way. But for someone with an soinal operation is it good to have an teacher with much experience. So he/she can show you an easier way of the exercises. It is important for your star...t with yoga. The complicated exercises will be done later...and then you can be sure what you can do and what you don`t do or better later after a little training.
