whenever I advise My patients on Yoga practices, the first question arises used to be whether a common man leading worldy life can get himself involve in Yoga practice(Most village people still believe Yoga meant for Yogies only and not for common man.How can I convince them?

  • 1. You have to convince the villagers by showing the benefits that the villagers may derive by practising the Yoga. Without seeing any benefits, no one does anything and no one'll follow anything; be it you, villagers or anyone else for that matter...!
    2. You have to show the villagers how the villagers may MOST efficiently integrate the Yoga-practice with their daily routine without disturbing the later's daily routine. I know this peculiar aspect by my own experience. Often, the rural folks have protested to me by saying that they don't have time to do the Yoga, as they have to get up early in the morning, take care of their animals [buffaloes/cows/oxen],etc...So, I have had to listen to their schedule and suggest the Yoga-regimen accordingly on individual to individual basis...
    3. Try your level best and leave the rest to the Almighty.......:-)
  • Dear Kanagasudaram Jee,

Actually, in my point of view that one can only give them advice when they are in need but to accept or follow on the advised subject that is their own decisions but by force it is difficult to change ones thoughts and habits. Basically we should understand about the first desire or want of a person to whom we are giving advice. If they want bread and we give them some thing else then it is not as per their wish then it is sure that they will not follow your words. Yoga is for all and it should be very clear that a common person gets turned into a yogi or becomes such and for that a clear vision with a actual target is set to achieve through his action (karma.)

One can convince to other only through his experiences achieved during doing his karma on whether it is relating to material life or spiritual life, as he has been walked on this path and have had come to understand the truth. So simply saying do yoga or giving advice to do yoga will not be effective unless he himself is in. Yoga, Meditation is internal part of the life so get into this ones attitude should be very clear and determined towards his aim.

So convince at your level best and keep the rest for their choice and do not worry whether they obey you or not.

  • Hari om Kanagasundaram ji,

I do understand that when people have major problems in their life due to poverty, then it can be hard to tell them that it is good to sit and meditate. They may not be having enough to eat or having other problems that it may be difficult to convince them that meditation is good for everyone. Therefore, I would not discuss much with them about it, but I would organize a workshop where their children are also involved: For example having the children paint or do some creative work. The parents should have a feeling that it is educational and therefore beneficial for their children and themselves.

Within that workshop I would have them perhaps listen to sounds and ask them what they feel or visualize when they hear the sounds. You would need some people to help you with this.

There are many ways to practice focus or concentration. At some point you can ask them to close their eyes and listen to the music or sounds. That way they can slowly become acquainted with meditation through the personal and practical experience and not through lectures. This is of course something that has to be done several times as an on-going activity. You need to keep it all very simple and always give the workshop members a feeling of success, inspiration and peace. That way they will gradually develop a feeling or liking for it. Some may not like it. But there would be some who would.

Creative work can be very healing on many levels. Painting can be very good as well.

I believe practice is most important. People often understand certain things after having made practical experiences in that context because then they can relate to it especially when listening to someone talking about it.

    • Dear Madam,

Thank u for u r comments on My discussion.and My discussions will continue.
  • Probably the best way is through your own example. Another way is historical figures, like king Janaka (ok he was a king and we're not, but still...). There are also many places in the scriptures and writings by different yogis that yoga is for everyone, especially these days as yoga has moved away from solely the ashram environment to include many yoga centers and home practitioners.
    Good luck with this :-).
