How to get rid of desires?

Develop Viveka or the power of discrimination. Brahman is real. The world is unreal.
There is no Vasana or desire in Brahman. The desire is in the mind. Make Vichara. All desires
will dwindle into nothing. Mark the Doshas in the objects. The objects are Asat, Jada, Duhkha,
impure. Develop burning Mumukshutva. This strong desire for Self-realization will destroy all
other worldly desires. Control the Indriyas also. Develop Vairagya. Give up objects. This is
Tyaga. All desires will melt away.

  • This is a great quote by Sivananda

Here are some of my thought on this.
"Brahman is real. The world is unreal. (this is the same a the buddhists teach)
There is no Vasana or desire in Brahman. (the absolute reality, the One)
The desire is in the mind (consciousness descending into the body and seeking satisfaction through thesenses forgetting its real nature. Sat-Chit-Ananda).

"This strong desire for Self-realization will destroy all
other worldly desires. Control the Indriyas also. Develop Vairagya. Give up objects. This is
Tyaga. All desires will melt away.

How to develope detachment..that is a good queestion. The desires and pull of the sense is very strong.
Since the root of desire is in the mind one can use (I use) mantra. mantra or HamSa.breath meditation will eventually cut the root of desires by revealing the inner bliss that requires no-thing for its fulfillment. Eventually one can drop the mantra and just rest in the Self.

Its been a long road for me in this incarnation and hardly have gained a mile. Using mantra in "mantralaya" meditation has helped me tremendously in keeping some peace and sanity and giving me glimses of the glory of self and god realization.

Thanks for this quote and reminding me of the goal and path.

    namaste
