Swami Sivananda's Famous glance

10/2/2010 Excerpt from my daily blog: www.swamivishnudevananda.com

"Swami Sivananda's Famous Glance"

Swami Sivananda’s famous glance was given to people doing something out of the ordinary. Something “off the wall, absurd.”

He would lift His glasses, rest them on His forehead and close one eye that was the signal and everyone working in the office was alerted and probably entertained !

He would take a gold coin and put it into His mouth and write for 5-6 hours. He wrote from his own experience.

If He

Biorhythalead (Octoccata part 4)

large_thumbnail
("8" by gui.tavares)

The fourth movement from « Octoccata » is entitled « Biorhythalead. » Its title came about from the markers I used to identify each of the sub-sections of the composition.

After a transition reminiscent of « Nothing To Lose » from UK's « Danger Money, » the music moves into a passage featuring contrasting lines that ascend and descend in alternation, thus making the partition (particularly the « Piano Roll » view in SONAR, the MIDI sequencing software I use) look like a bior

Vibrastinato (Octoccata part 3)

large_thumbnail
("Octoccata Freeway" by Christopher Stewart based on this Interstate Shield)

« Vibrastinato, » the third movement from « Octoccata, » gets its name from the combination of vibraphone and ostinato, and features an abundance of polyrhythms.

The section begins in « Modern Poligrafic Ensemble » mode featuring Christian taking the lead role on the vibraphone. When writing the piece I imagined that, in a live setting, he would be using a MIDI controller instead of a real vibraphone in order to enable h

Igorchestral (Octoccata part 2)

large_thumbnail
("eight" by timlewisnm)

« Igorchestral, » the second movement of « Octoccata, » has been thus named because of the inspiration for the music, and the selected arrangement.

Igor Stravinsky is indubitably one of the composers I admire the most. The music he composed for the ballet « The Firebird » stands at the top of my list of favorites. One day while dabbling on the keyboards back in April 1999, I came across a figure somewhat reminiscent of the beginning of « The Augurs of Spring: Dances of th

Octoverture (Octoccata part 1)

large_thumbnail
("1898 New Zealand stamp 8 pence blue" by The Crown)

« Octoccata » is an instrumental suite clocking in at a little over 16 minutes. The title comes from the combination of octatonic and toccata, and is inspired by Emerson, Lake & Palmer‘s adaptation of the fourth movement of Alberto Ginastera‘s first piano concerto, which they published on their « Brain Salad Surgery » album under the title « Toccata. »

The intent here is simply to « make some noise. » In other words, the music is meant to be s

Anger as a result of meditataion

OM

I had an interesting question today, so I thought I'd share the answer:

Ques: twice after meditation I found myself very angry and Itried to express it in a safe way but did bite my husband's head off. Any thoughts on the matter. (from Judy in New Zealand)

S.S. ans:
Yes, I do have very definite thoughts on the matter.Anger seems to be a VERY common reaction to meditation. People are usually confused by it, as you expect medtation to make you more peaceful and hence, less angry.
Meditation works t

Law of Karma & Destiny.

The Vedanta Treatise, the Eternities – Swami Parthasarathy
CHAPTER XVII – LAW OF CAUSATION

The Supreme Law
The universe is an expression of innumerable laws of nature. They are physical, chemical, biological, psychological, philosophical and several other laws. These are all impeccable, infallible, each having a cause-effect relationship. A cause for an effect and an effect for a cause. The meticulous functioning of the countless laws is the law of causation. They seem to bow in obeisance to some m

Relationships and Cooperation between Chakras

OM

I'm working on a chapter for my book that looks at how the chakras inter-relate and work with each other. Actually, the independent actions and particular characteristics of the various chakras can only be separated intellectually. The function of each chakra intricately blends with the workings of the others.

Tounderstanding the working of each chakra, it is important for you to see the bigger picture. In addition to taking in energy and acting as a transmitter for your thoughts and feelings,

Love

‎"Only if one knows the truth of love, which is the real nature of Self, will the strong entangled knot of life be untied. Only if one attains the height of love will liberation be attained. Such is the heart of all religions. The experience of Self is only love, which is seeing only love, hearing only love, feeling only love, tasting only love and smelling only love, which is bliss." Progress

Next time I shall die from the man, that I may grow the wings of angels. From the angel too must I seek advance; All things shall perish save His face... verily unto Him do we return.” Rumi

Procession (Juggernaut part 3)

("Ratha Yatra Festival in Puri, India" by James Fergusson)

The third part of « Juggernaut, » entitled « Procession, » evokes the arrival of the juggernaut before it unleashes into a frenzy of steamrolling.

The title and music of this section are both inspired by the origin of the word. From Wikipedia :

One of the most famous of Indian temples is the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Orissa, which has the Ratha Yatra ("chariot procession"), an annual procession of chariots carrying the murtis (statues) of

The Mechanics Of Karma

("A free body diagram of a mass on an inclined plane" by Mets501)

Will the island turn into an archipelago ? More poetry today...

How long have I hankered
For the right way to go
How far have I wandered
To know what I now know

Laying under the moon
Rising up with the crow
And the wail of the loon
In the rain or the glow

How many ups and downs
I had to lose the count
Just as with forms and nouns
To keep climbing the mount

How many times I slipped
Escaping restriction
Expecting to be tripped
By disguised protect

Surface (The Dam part 6)

("Surface Tension" by darkmatter)

In « Surface, » the sixth chapter of « The Dam, » the protagonist/narrator is gradually returning to activity after having transformed into who he feels like being, and will ultimately reach the surface where he will properly begin his new existence.

In the storyline, this step marks the end of a long process of metamorphosis wherein one has endured many transformations and shed that which belongs to their former way of being. Once released from the demanding tr

Sooner Or Later

("Multiac Nylon" by poligraf)

Today’s music does not comes from Poligraf’s catalogue as such. Rather, it is a piece for solo guitar that I intend to publish on an album of about ten acoustic compositions, all arranged for classical guitar, either playing solo or accompanied by other acoustic instruments.

The original title of this piece was « Maybe Later, » but I never liked it that much because of the element of doubt and uncertainty that it conveys, which doesn’t fit the music. I reworked some

Resilience (Juggernaut part 5)

The fifth section of « Juggernaut » is entitled « Resilience, » which is defined as :

The physical property of a material that can return to its original shape or position after deformation that does not exceed its elastic limit.

An occurrence of rebounding or springing back.

In the storyline of the suite, the section portrays the situation after the traumatic experience, the metanoia, as the protagonists are bouncing back from the onslaught of « Steamr
